All season, the Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament has been tough to figure out.
But nobody figured the county tournament would be this wild and hectic so early on.
As the season wore on, it appeared that three teams — Monroe, Old Bridge, and New Brunswick — stood out among the rest and would likely fight amongst each other to hoist the Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament crown on Oct. 29.
But all three of those teams, which received a bye to the second round of the tournament, failed to win a single game. Top-seeded Monroe was stunned by 16-seeded Sayreville, 2-1. Second-seeded New Brunswick fell to 15-seeded Metuchen, 2-1, and fourth-seeded Old Bridge, which had not lost in 10 games, fell to 13-seeded Edison, 1-0.
