PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Jennifer Chen got to go out on top. The East Brunswick senior closed out a stellar high school career by winning her third consecutive GMC Tournament title at first singles, defeating South Brunswick’s Rashmi Venkatarama, 6-1, 6-1, in the final.
Prior to that, Chen had a stellar performance in the state tournament. Chen, who lost in the third round each of the previous three seasons, survived a three set showdown with Red Bank Regional’s Abby Decker, defeating her 6-1, 4-6, 11-9. Chen then record an upset over Chatham’s Scarlett Blydenburgh to reach the quarterfinals where she lost to Holy Angels’ Ashley Hess.
A LOOK AT THE GREATER MIDDLESEX CONFERENCE
• South Brunswick won the GMC Tournament team title with 42 points, edging out J.P. Stevens (38 points) and East Brunswick (36 points) for the title. The Vikings were led by championships at both doubles spots as Swathi Chandrika and Prathuysha Pandu won first doubles and Ashi Yadav and Sneha Rampalli won second doubles.
• J.P. Stevens shook off an early 2-2 start by winning consecutive matches as it reached the North Jersey, Section 2, Group 4 final where it lost 4-1 to Ridge.
• J.P. Stevens and South Brunswick shared the GMC Red Division championship with an 11-1 record. Monroe claimed the White Division title with a perfect 12-0 record. Metuchen went 8-0 to win the Blue Division and Highland Park went 12-0 to win the Gold Division.
