The GMC has named the following players the Jersey Mike’s Athletes of the Week. Jersey Mikes will be giving all GMC AOWs a free sub this season. #ASubAbove
Nicole Johnson – East Brunswick: A senior leader for the Bears basketball team, Nicole has had a great season and career. Nicole’s leadership on and off the court as the teams point guard, has helped the Bears boast a current 14-1 record as they roll into the GMC tournament. Nicole recently scored her 1000th point as a Bear and looks to take her basketball career to Lafayette next year. Before that she looks to help the Bears collect their second GMC title in her four years!.
Mitchell Polito – East Brunswick: A senior leader on the wrestling team, Mitch has had an outstanding career as a Bear. He is a very decorated wrestler and he hopes to add to that as the team gets into tournament time.This season Mitch boasts an undefeated record, is a GMC champion, and surpassed 100 total career wins. Mitch has committed to Lehigh to wrestle at the next level, but has his eyes set on an NJSIAA state championship this year!
Wyatt Buchany – Edison: Wyatt is a good student and athlete for Edison High School. He maintains a strong course load and plays two sports during the school year as well. Wyatt is setting his sites on the GMC and State Individuals with hopes of making the top spot. He is a junior three year varsity athlete. In the last week, he bowled a perfect game (300) and rolled his career high series of 790.
Jason Mraz – Edison: “Super Sophomore” and “High Flyer” Jason Mraz has broken the pole vault school record in almost every meet this season. The record was taken down immediately in the opening weekend of the season and has since been pushed to nearly 13 feet. He placed 2nd overall in the GMC Individual Championships and had the highest vault of the day at the GMC Relay Championships. His goal is to secure a spot in the Meet of Champions and perhaps a Nationals Qualifying Invite.
Dominique Liantonio – Mother Seton: Dominique had an outstanding week. The sophomore bowled a 167, 183, and 181 against Piscataway and a 213, 181, and 175 against Carteret. Dominique finished 35th in the GMC individual tournament. She is tied for the highest average on the team with a 146.
Joe Heilmann – South Plainfield: After finishing third in the State of New Jersey as a junior, Joe Heilmann looked to dominate as a senior for the South Plainfield Wrestling Team. He currently is 27-0 with 17 pins. Joe won his fourth individual GMC title, pinning every opponent he faced. He looks to lead South Plainfield to another Central Jersey Group III Sectional and Group III State Championship next week. With Joe’s determination and work ethic, the Tigers are looking forward to seeing him finish his illustrious career.
Lanasia Neal-South Plainfield: This past week Lanasia placed herself into the history books of South Plainfield Bowling. Going into this year’s Individual Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament as the reigning Champion, Lanasia had a lot of pressure. This did not stop her from dominating the conference once again. She bowled a combined 705 in the qualifying round. After the second round, Lanasia was well ahead with a total of 1336. In the final ladder match, Lanasia prevailed 180-179 to win her second consecutive Individual GMC Title. Lanasia hopes to continue her dominance in the Individual State Championship.
