One of the great coaching careers in the history of New Jersey high school distance running is approaching the finish line.
Rich Gebauer, whose 33-year tenure filled the trophy cases at Cedar Ridge and then Old Bridge to the point over overflowing, said Tuesday that this is his final season working the stopwatch. He plans to retire to the Philadelphia area and be a full-time grandfather alongside his son Richie, a former South Plainfield wrestling standout, who is expecting his first child any day now.
“I guess it could not have happened at a better time, with cross country coming off of one of the best seasons we’ve ever had,” Gebauer said. “And I am leaving the cupboard still full. There’s some nice kids coming back, so I feel good about that.”
