Shelby Piccinic wiped away tears from her eyes as she stood about 20 yards from the finish line on Saturday morning at Thompson Park in Jamesburg.
The junior had just made history by becoming the first girl from Colonia to win a Greater Middlesex Conference cross-country title. As she reflected on what she had just accomplished, the magnitude of the moment began to hit Piccinic, and she was overcome with raw emotion.
In the team competition, South Brunswick, ranked No. 10 in the state, won its second straight title, 50-70 over runner-up East Brunswick. The Vikings, led by Chantel Osley’s fourth place finish in a personal best 19:12, averaged 20:03 and put six runners ahead of East Brunswick’s No. 4 runner to secure the victory.
South Brunswick has now captured nine GMC girls titles, the second most in GMC history behind the 15 won by Old Bridge.
